A lot has been happening at the Green Turtle Club Resort and Marina since our last newsletter and we are coming up on quite a few fun events during this summer!
One of the most interesting news items is our new package which includes airfare on either Continental or American Airlines. The name of the package is "When Turtles Fly" and it's available from now until 16th of July 2010 at a guaranteed price of $632 per person for 3 nights' accommodation, service charge, tax, roundtrip airfare and all service charges, taxes and fees! Then from the 16th of July through the 6th of September the price of $499 per person comes into effect! We close for our annual cleaning and maintenance program from the 7th of September until we open back up for our big Haunted Halloween weekend on the 28th of October! The "When Turtles Fly" package is also available for only $499 per person from the 1st through the 22nd of November and again from the 28th of November through the 17th of December. This has become our most popular package because of the great value and ease of booking. Call us for more information or to make a booking on our toll free line at: 1-866-528-0539. Book soon to avoid disappointment as there is a limited number of spaces at these low prices!
The 23rd Annual Green Turtle Club Fishing Tournament was held on 11-14 of May 2010 and for the second year had an all release billfish division. This tournament had already been releasing white marlin and sailfish for many years.
Final results were: two blue marlin and two whites released, many dolphin and a couple yellowfin tuna boated, and several of the participants did have marlin on but were unable to get them to the boat for an official release. The Victory Lap a 56' Viking owned by John O'Steen of Vero Beach, Florida was the overall winner. Captain Mark Yanno was able to have two of his anglers catch and release a blue and a white. Jesse Bollinger who owns Equity VIII was second in the tournament.
Eddie Bodie on Seawolf won the white marlin trophy and Wolverine had the heaviest yellowfin tuna. Sue Wolsey off the Big T's won the top lady angler prize. Tournament participants contributed over $1050 for the Abaco Cancer Society. We have tentative dates of 10-13 May 2011 for the 24th annual tournament. Please keep an eye on our website for more details and registration forms. Congratulations to all tournament participants and we look forward to having even more fun next year. Tight Lines!
Green Turtle Cay Lionfish Derby
The 2nd Annual Green Turtle Cay Lionfish Derby is being held on the 18-19th of June. An informative lecture regarding lionfish and captain's meeting will be held on the 18th of June. The Derby is on the 19th of June with awards dinner and Gully Roosters playing on the 19th of June. Last year there were 25 boats with 100 contestants and over 1400 lionfish were captured, killed and either eaten or sent to Nassau for research. The entry fee is $125 per boat with 4 persons allowed in each team. Included in the entry fee are: 1 pair of HexArmor protective gloves, 2 drink tickets, and 2 awards banquet tickets. If more banquet tickets are required they are available at $30 per person. Please check out www.lionfishderby.com for more information or registration forms, or stop by the Green Turtle Club or Brendal's Dive Center.
Molly and Lynn travel to South Beach to promote the Green Turtle Club!
The Fins Weekend at Miami Beach Marina was held on the 4th and 5th of June. The event benefited the Miami Dolphins Foundation which sponsors many charitable organizations. Green Turtle Club Resort and Marina was contacted through Lynn and asked to give a prize to be auctioned off at the event. Well, we thought this was a great idea and gave a 4 night stay in one of our Deluxe Accommodations here at the Club paired with roundtrip tickets for 2 people on Sky Limo. The Dolphins Foundation invited Lynn and Molly to attend the awards ceremony and they accepted. We were able to give out 500 of our beautiful brochures at the event as well as meeting many great athletes and fans that showed a strong interest in coming out to the Green Turtle Club. So you may see some Dolphins around the Club this summer that do not live in the ocean!
Congratulations Class of 2010!
Congratulations to Chamon McIntosh who is graduating from Forest Heights Academy. Chamon is the son of our sales manager Molly McIntosh and he also has been working here at the Club part time on the docks, in the marina store and in the office for over a year. Chamon has been accepted to The Island School in Cape Eleuthera to study marine biology and sustainable tourism and after a 4 month internship will be attending Wingate University in North Carolina in the fall of 2011. We are all very proud of Chamon and are looking forward to hearing great stories of all his adventures when he comes back to work during his breaks from school!
Congratulations also to Cassie McIntosh who just graduated from Bethune Cookman with a bachelor's degree in computer engineering. She will be working in the states for a few years to gain experience before hopefully coming back to the Bahamas with her education and training and experience! Cassie's mother is Linda McIntosh, a long term employee and the Office Manager at the Green Turtle Club.
We also send out congratulations to Tyler Sawyer, the son of our Reservations Supervisor John Sawyer, who graduated from St. Francis de Sales High School and is planning to join the Coast Guard in early 2011. He is a decorated member of the Royal Bahamas Defense Force Rangers Program.
Congratulations to other staffers' graduating children:
Kevana McIntosh (mother Sandra McIntosh), Shaunice Jones (mother Ida Jones), Donald McIntosh (mother Julie Russell), Amber Newbold (daughter of Verona Newbold), Greneka Johnson (daughter of Diane Rolle) graduating from SC Bootle High School, Don McIntosh (son of Julie Russell) graduating from West Grand Bahama Youth Development and Crystal Levarity, who works part time at the Club, is graduating from Long Bay High School!
In addition, Blair Johnson the daughter of our General Manager, Lynn Johnson, is just finishing up 10th grade, but even though she is not graduating, congratulations are in order as she has been chosen to represent Abaco in the Miss Teen Bahamas World pageant. Blair will be traveling to Nassau this summer to compete and if she wins, she will go on to represent the whole of the Bahamas (700 islands!) in competitions around the world.
We at the Green Turtle Club are very proud of our staff and of their children and we wish them all the very best the world has to offer and hope that they will all offer great contributions to the world!
Don't Miss Regatta Week!
A definite time not to miss being in Abaco on Green Turtle Cay is the Regatta Week and particularly the "Cheeseburger in Paradise" party on Fiddle Cay on the 2nd of July this year. Some estimates have the attendance at 2,000 people, so the little island of Fiddle Cay sinks just a little down in the ocean on that day. Free margaritas, free cheeseburgers, free cups, free temporary tattoos from the sponsoring boat "Stranded Naked." For more information go to www.strandednaked.com or call us at the Green Turtle Club to make your room and dock reservations early to get the best pricing and availability.
